German grammar · A1 – beginner · Day 9

Modal verbs (können, müssen, wollen …)

Modalverben – modal in position 2, infinitive at the end

Modal verbs express ability, obligation, permission and wishes. They work with a second verb in the infinitive at the end of the sentence (the sentence bracket again!).

Ichkannmodal · pos. 2gutschwimmen.infinitive · END
könnenmüssenwollendürfensollenmögen
ichkannmusswilldarfsollmag
dukannstmusstwillstdarfstsollstmagst
er/sie/eskannmusswilldarfsollmag
wirkönnenmüssenwollendürfensollenmögen
ihrkönntmüsstwolltdürftsolltmögt
sie/Siekönnenmüssenwollendürfensollenmögen
Three patterns: 1) ich = er/sie/es (no -t!) 2) the vowel changes in the singular (except sollen) 3) the second verb goes to the end as an infinitive.

Meanings

Questions and separable verbs

Kannst du mir helfen? Can you help me?
Wann musst du aufstehen? When do you have to get up? (separable verb stays together at the end)
If the meaning is clear, the infinitive can be dropped: Ich muss nach Hause. (…gehen) · Kannst du Deutsch? (…sprechen)
