German grammar · A1 – beginner · Day 2

Word order: verb in position 2 & questions

Satzbau: Verb an Position 2, W-Fragen, Ja/Nein-Fragen – The conjugated verb is always the 2nd element in a statement

This is the most important rule of German word order. In a statement, the conjugated verb is always in position 2. Position 1 can be the subject – or something else (time, place, object). Then the subject jumps behind the verb.

Ich1 · subjectlerne2 · VERBheute Deutsch.rest
Heute1 · timelerne2 · VERBichsubjectDeutsch.
Deutsch1 · objectlerne2 · VERBichheute.
Ich wohne in Berlin.I live in Berlin.
In Berlin wohne ich.In Berlin I live. (emphasis on Berlin)
Am Wochenende spiele ich Fußball. At the weekend I play football.
English allows “Today I learn…”. German does NOT: Heute ich lerne ✗ → Heute lerne ich ✓. A “position” can be several words: Am Wochenende = one position.

W-questions (open questions)

Question word in position 1, verb in position 2, then the subject.
