21 – 99: “one-and-twenty”

German says the units first, then und, then the tens – all in one word:

21 = einundzwanzigone-and-twenty
34 = vierunddreißigfour-and-thirty
57 = siebenundfünfzigseven-and-fifty
99 = neunundneunzignine-and-ninety

Note: alone it is eins, but in compounds ein-: einundzwanzig, einhundert.

Big numbers

125 = hundertfünfundzwanzigone hundred twenty-five
2026 = zweitausendsechsundzwanzig2026 (as a year too)
1990 = neunzehnhundertneunzig1990 – years before 2000 use “hundred”
1.000.000 = eine Millionone million (Germans use a dot for thousands)

Prices, phone numbers, age

Meine Nummer ist null eins sieben sechs …My number is 0176 … (digit by digit or in pairs)
Wie alt bist du? – Ich bin dreiundzwanzig.How old are you? – I am 23.
On the phone Germans often say zwo instead of zwei so it doesn’t sound like drei.
