German grammar · A2 – elementary · Day 25

Future tense (Futur I) & the verb “werden”

Futur I · werden – Ich werde morgen arbeiten. · Ich werde Arzt.

ichduer/sie/eswirihrsie/Sie
werdewirstwirdwerdenwerdetwerden
werden (pos. 2) + infinitive (end)
Ich werde nächstes Jahr in Deutschland studieren.I will study in Germany next year.
Es wird morgen regnen. It will rain tomorrow. (prediction)
Ich werde dich nie vergessen.I will never forget you. (promise)
Er wird wohl krank sein.He is probably ill. (assumption with wohl)
Very often Germans simply use the present tense + time word for the future: Morgen fliege ich nach Wien. Futur I sounds more formal, emphatic or like a prediction.

werden as a full verb = “to become / get”

Ich will Ärztin werden.I want to become a doctor.
Es wird dunkel. / Mir wird schlecht. It’s getting dark. / I’m feeling sick.
Three faces of werden:
werden + noun/adjective = become · werden + infinitive = future · werden + Partizip II = passive (Day 28).
