Dialogue: Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten

Bruno tells Sofia a famous fairy tale. Listen for the Präteritum verbs!

Once upon a time there was an old donkey. He could no longer work, and his master didn’t want him any more.

Sofia: Oh, der arme Esel! Was machte er dann?
Oh, the poor donkey! What did he do then?

He ran away and went to Bremen. There he wanted to become a town musician.

Sofia: War er allein?
Was he alone?

Bruno: Nein.
No. On the way he met an old dog, a tired cat and a rooster. They all came along.

In the evening they came into a dark forest. Suddenly they saw a light. It was a house – a robbers’ house!

Sofia: Hatten sie keine Angst?
Weren’t they afraid?

Yes, but they had a plan. The dog jumped onto the donkey, the cat onto the dog and the rooster flew onto the cat.

Then they made “music” together: the donkey brayed, the dog barked, the cat meowed and the rooster crowed.

Sofia: Haha! Und die Räuber?
Haha! And the robbers?

The robbers thought a monster was coming and ran into the forest. After the robbers had run away, the animals ate all the food.

They liked the house so much that they stayed there. They never got to Bremen!

Summary

🇩🇪 Culture tip: The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, collected German folk tales in the 19th century: Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood … In Bremen there is a famous bronze statue of the four „Town Musicians“ – touching the donkey’s legs is said to bring luck.
