da-compounds & wo-compounds (darauf, worauf …)

Präpositionaladverbien: da(r)- und wo(r)- – Worauf wartest du? – Ich warte darauf.

When the object of a preposition is a thing or idea (not a person), German combines da(r)- + preposition for “it/that” and wo(r)- + preposition for questions. Add -r- when the preposition starts with a vowel.

For people never use da-/wo-: ✗ Ich denke daran (about my mum) → ✓ Ich denke an sie.
